Plympton Library NewsPlympton students in grades 4 and 5 all use library software called Destiny Quest to keep track of their reading and explore the library collection. Students are allowed to "friend" other students to recommend books. This is a great tool to use to discuss the responsible use of social media platforms as students get ready for middle school. All students were given letters about this to share with their families. In case yours was left in a locker, you can read it here.
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will participate in a new citywide reading initiative this year called the Waltham Children's Book Award. All public elementary schools and the Waltham Public Library will participate in this program, which is designed to promote and introduce high quality literature to our students and encourage students to become avid readers. You can find information about this program on the Plympton School Library website. Students get credit for reading and listening to these books, so feel free to read a book to your child too! The librarians promise that you'll enjoy these titles too--we looked for favorite books from each elementary school to share widely.Plympton Student/Parent Directory
Not sure of the homework this week? Having a birthday party and want to invite some of the kids in your child's class? Try this...Student/Parent Directory-here is a quick and easy way to have access to other parents emails. This will only be available to those who make their information available as well. Do it once and done. It takes less than five minutes.

Plympton Walk-To-School DaysThis summer, the MA Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program presented nearly 80 awards to schools and community champions to recognize their efforts in fostering programs for students to safely walk and bike to school. The Plympton Health & Wellness Council is pleased to announce we were recognized as an exemplary program for the greater Boston area. "As a brand new partner, the Plympton
Elementary School hit the ground running. Showing an enthusiasm for
the Safe Routes program, the school organized their first Massachusetts Walk and Bike to School Day event this pasy May, which was a great success for their community, with over 70% of students from the school participating." It is because of our wonderful
Plympton community that this initiative was so successful in its first year-thank you!
This school year, the Health & Wellness Council would like to expand on this initiative. We will hold Walk to School Days on every Friday in October and May. Be on the lookout for more information to come home soon.

Plympton Community Garden We've done our initial research, now it's time to get our hands dirty and get this garden started! There is much to do-from applying for grants to gathering donations to planning and building-but backed with Mr Duffy's support, we are confident that we should be able to break ground and start growing by Spring. You DO NOT need to have a green thumb to be a part of this process.
If you would like more information on how you can get involved with the Plympton Health and Wellness Council, please reach out to PlymptonHWC@gmail.com.
5th Grade City-Wide Washington DC TripAlicia Robillard is a 5th grade parent at Fitzgerald Elementary. She is planning a 5th Grade Trip to Washington DC that is open to all 5th grade students in Waltham. The trip will occur during April School Vacation week. There is a meeting this Tuesday, October 3rd at 8pm, 693 Main Street, Waltham. Park on the street or in back. See message below from Mrs. Robillard regarding the trip and meeting:
1. Confirm all current sign ups
2. Discuss the current plan for the trip, and allow folks to sign up for the 'waitlist bus' if applicable. At this point, we have one full bus and will be taking waitlist sign ups only. IF we get enough interest to fill a second bus, we will. If not we can't promise a slot.
3. Confirm any updates on the actual plans including the possibility of adding a flying option
4. Questions from parents
5th Grade Celebration Planning CommitteeI realize it's a little early to think about our 5th graders "graduating" from Plympton in June, but every really good celebration needs planning and people! If you are interested in joining the 5th Grade Celebration Planning Committee please email me (Melissa Bardsley) at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are many aspects of planning to consider and we would love to assemble a hearty group of parents to divide the work. I worked on the celebration last year and it is really rewarding!
