Plympton Health & Wellness Council
2016/2017 UPDATE ON INITIATIVES
Hike it, Plympton!
With two successful hikes under our belts this year, we are looking forward to many more to come. Keep an eye out for details for our spring hike up Prospect Hill on Friday, April 14th.
Plympton Health and Wellness Night
We will continue our tradition of inviting health related community groups and businesses to share their knowledge, goods and talents. Save the date for April 7th. Your health and wellness related contacts can reach out to Donnie at DonLucente@yahoo.com for more details.
Plympton Community Garden
Calling all gardeners…we need you! We are looking for subcommittee members to help us to start our very own school garden. No gardening experience necessary. Parents, grandparents, family members, staff and community members are welcome. Contact Jen Renaud at JLRenaud40@gmail.com if you are interested.
Plympton Walk-to-school Days
Walking to school is a great way to get in some fresh air and exercise. Keep an eye out for details on how all students, even those who bus, can participate in walk-to-school days on May 5th & June 2nd.
The Mass Dept of Transporation Safe Routes to School people have been a great resource for getting our walk to school day program off the ground. They were the ones who provided the I walked stickers for the inaugural walk and we have book marks from them for the next walk. Their website provides safety information for walking/biking to school.
Mass Medical Society Anti-tobacco Poster Contest
Special thanks to school nurse, Sharon Duquette who gave students a mini-lesson on the negative effects of tobacco use this month. Many students in grades 1-5 participated in a poster contest with Mass Medical Society with grade-specific, anti-tobacco themed drawings. Best of luck to all students who submitted posters!
Health and Wellness Resources
Come check out the health and wellness resources newly available in the school library! Here students of all ages can read about ways to keep their bodies growing, healthy and safe. New health and wellness resources are also available in the school nursing office. Tons of topics to choose from. Help us spread the word to students!
Teacher and Staff Wellness
Our health and wellness initiatives are not just for students and their families. We are about to kick off some fun and educational programs for Plympton teachers and staff. Keep your eyes and ears peeled as our teachers walk across America, munch of healthy snacks and share some tricks on how to incorporate movement and relaxation in the classroom.
Standing desks promote use of core muscles, increase caloric burn and can enhance learning engagement. Special thanks to Ergotron who donated two high quality standing desks for use in a pilot with Plympton students. Mrs. O’Brien’s 5th grade students will be the first to provide feedback on how standing desks work for them. We look forward to sharing this experience and hope to add more standing desks for student use soon.
You may also see Health and Wellness Council members serving healthy snacks at the PJ Dance Party and coordinating a fun-run/walk during Spirit Day in June!
Special thanks to Belmont Savings Bank who provided a grant to Plympton Elementary School PTO Health and Wellness Council and helped us make these initiatives possible.
